Public consultation on the Nationwide House Energy Ratings Scheme (NatHERS) for existing homes is closed.
We are extending NatHERS to also provide energy assessments and ratings to existing homes across the country, in addition to its current focus of providing these services for new homes in Australia.
We asked for your feedback on expanding NatHERS to existing homes. This is what you told us.
How you had your say
We sought feedback from people on the foundations for the expanded program and its key components for launch in mid‑2025. This included the:
program objectives and design principles
preferred high-level delivery model for NatHERS for existing homes
assessor training, assessor accreditation and audit processes
home energy rating certificate and upgrade advice
energy rating tools.
We invited feedback from people across the home energy ratings, social housing, property, banking and finance, and vocational education and training sectors.

The approach to delivering NatHERS with greater controls established through a procurement and licensing model
Identified areas for improvement in the workforce capacity, governance structure and consumer experience.
What happens next
Your feedback has been considered by the Australian and state and territory governments and helped to shape the way in which NatHERS for existing homes will be delivered from launch from mid-2025. More information on how the delivery model is being implemented is available on the NatHERS website.
