Overview
The climate change function transferred to our department from the Department of the Environment and Energy on 1 February 2020.
In 2017, the Government reviewed Australia's climate policies — including the Emissions Reduction Fund and its Safeguard Mechanism — to ensure they remain effective in achieving Australia's emissions reduction targets. As an outcome of the review, the Government committed to work with business to improve the operation of the Safeguard Mechanism.
The Government released a consultation paper outlining an approach to make the Safeguard Mechanism fairer and simpler and bring the Safeguard Mechanism baselines up-to-date with current circumstances.
Interested businesses and members of the community were invited to make written submissions.
