Overview

The Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee is seeking feedback on a proposed variation to the Carbon Credits (Domestic, Commercial and Industrial Wastewater) Methodology Determination 2015 (the Wastewater method).

The proposed variation will implement the crediting period extension of 5 years for non-biomethane projects as recommended by the Committee.

Background

The Wastewater method incentivises projects to capture and use or destroy methane in biogas that would otherwise have been released to the atmosphere from open anaerobic lagoons used to treat domestic, commercial, or industrial wastewater. The method also incentivises upgrading biogas into biomethane.

A crediting period extension review of the Wastewater method was completed in May 2024. The Committee received 5 submissions during targeted stakeholder consultation on the method in November 2022.

The Committee found that there was sufficient evidence to demonstrate that extending the crediting period by 5 years for non-biomethane projects would continue to result in abatement unlikely to occur in the ordinary course of events.
