Overview

Earlier this year DCCEEW invited feedback from engineers, peak industry bodies, governments and subject matter experts on a discussion paper that outlined the proposed guiding principles and key considerations for the update to the climate change considerations chapter in Australian Rainfall and Runoff. The consultation returned over 50 submissions from a range of stakeholder groups including government, asset owners, industry, engineering consultants and academia. This update summarises the findings and next steps. Thank you for your interest in the update to this important guidance

We are seeking input to update the Climate Change Considerations chapter of Australian Rainfall and Runoff (ARR): A Guide to Flood Estimation

The publication is one of the most widely used references to help engineers and the construction industry manage flood risk for the built environment. The latest version was published in 2019 and since this time, significant new research findings have been generated. Both the scientific and engineering community recognise that an update is required.

The Department of Climate Change Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), in partnership with Engineers Australia, has started a project funded under the National Emergency Management Agency, Disaster Risk Reduction Package to update the Climate Change Considerations chapter of ARR.

We have developed draft guiding principles and key considerations for this update, which we have outlined in a discussion paper. We are seeking feedback from engineers, peak industry bodies, governments and other subject matter experts on this discussion paper to ensure that the updated guidance reflects the needs of users and anyone else with an interest in the guidance.

The project team will combine your input on the guiding principles and key considerations with peer-reviewed science to update the Climate Change Considerations chapter. You will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the draft replacement Climate Change Considerations chapter later in 2023, before the document is finalised in mid-2024.

To have your say:
