This so-called "Guarantee of Origin" (GO) scheme is a deeply problematic, misleading, and deceptive attempt to mask the truth about Australia's energy future. It pretends to be a noble pursuit of "clean energy" while actually facilitating a massive green energy poverty grift, pushing the nation further into an energy crisis that punishes everyday Australians.
The entire premise is built on the false idea that we can guarantee the origin of "renewable" electricity and claim it as clean and sustainable, without addressing the real, underlying issues of energy affordability, reliability, and fairness. This scheme is a smokescreen to maintain the illusion of progress, all while continuing to push Australians toward energy poverty. What it essentially does is provide political cover for those profiting off greenwashing, all while leaving struggling families and businesses with unaffordable energy bills.
By wrapping it in the language of "economic opportunities" and "domestic and international demand," this legislation effectively opens the door to corporate exploitation of renewable energy certification without meaningfully improving energy security or reducing costs for the average person. It's a regulatory framework that helps industry players cash in while the very people who need affordable, reliable energy the most are left behind.
Instead of genuinely transforming Australia into a sustainable energy leader, this bill entrenches a system that uses public funds and resources to support those already making massive profits from this so-called "green" energy industry. It’s a grotesque exploitation of environmental concerns for financial gain. The poor and vulnerable will bear the brunt of higher costs and unreliable energy supplies. Meanwhile, corporations and political elites will pat themselves on the back for their "green" credentials, even as they turn a blind eye to the real consequences for ordinary Australians.
This is not a real solution to the energy crisis—it's a scam. A green energy poverty scam. The GO scheme does not guarantee lower bills or cleaner energy—it guarantees more bureaucratic complexity, higher costs, and continued market manipulation by those at the top. Far from fixing energy poverty, it entrenches it. Instead of solving the pressing issues, it serves as a charade designed to look good while further impoverishing Australians. It's time to call out this travesty for what it is: a disingenuous, harmful, and regressive policy that needs to be stopped before it does more damage.
