Overview

The Australian Heritage Council (AHC) is assessing the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade Route for inclusion in the National Heritage List.

The National Heritage List is our list of natural, historic and Indigenous places of outstanding significance to Australia. Places nominated must meet one or more of 9 National Heritage List criteria.

The AHC has found that the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade Route might have National Heritage values under criterion (a), (g) and (h).

  • Criterion (a): As the location of the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade which was a key event in Australia’s history that resulted in an enduring annual event with nationwide influence.

  • Criterion (g): For the LGBTQIA+ communities’ connection with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade Route as a place of celebration of queer community and culture.

  • Criterion (h): For its connection with the 78ers who attended the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade in 1978 and associated protest events of 1978.
