Overview
The Director of National Parks will prepare 6 new management plans covering 44 marine parks.
These will replace 5 current plans, which expire in 2028:
Coral Sea Marine Park Management Plan
Temperate East Marine Parks Network Management Plan
South-west Marine Parks Network Management Plan
North-west Marine Parks Network Management Plan
North Marine Parks Network Management Plan
A new, separate management plan is proposed for Norfolk Marine Park.
We invite interested parties and members of the public to share your ideas on the future management of these marine parks or any changes you would like to propose. Your feedback will help us draft management plans. We recommend you review the relevant independent evaluation report/s when considering your feedback (see below). Once finalised, the plans will guide the management of 44 Australian Marine Parks for the next 10 years.
There will be 2 public consultation periods to inform the drafting of these management plans. Firstly (now) to gather input to inform the development of draft management plans, and lastly on the draft management plans.
The comments received during the 2 public consultation periods will be considered before final management plans are provided to the Minister for the Environment for approval.
Your input to the drafting of Australian Marine Park management plans is an opportunity to shape how the Australian Government can achieve its commitment to protecting 30% of Australia’s ocean in highly protected zoning (IUCN 1a and II) by 2030, in support of global targets for biodiversity conservation.
Alongside the drafting of management plans, changes are also proposed to the boundaries of Norfolk, Lord Howe and Gifford marine parks. A separate consultation process is underway on these changes which can be viewed here.
