Overview
We are seeking your comments on proposals to make changes to Norfolk Marine Park, Lord Howe Marine Park and Gifford Marine Park.
The proposed expansion of Norfolk Marine Park would involve:
incorporating a new area of sea adjacent to the existing marine park
amending the IUCN zoning within the current marine park footprint
changing the name of the marine park from Norfolk Marine Park to Norfolk Island Marine Park
revoking a 1.28 km2 area of the existing marine park at Cascade Pier to facilitate port operations and local tourism.
The proposed expansion of Lord Howe Marine Park would involve:
incorporating a new area of sea adjacent to the existing marine park including incorporating Gifford Marine Park into the proposed expanded Lord Howe Marine Park
amending the IUCN zoning within the current marine park footprint.
The proposed changes to Gifford Marine Park would involve:
Gifford Marine Park becoming part of the expanded Lord Howe Marine Park and no longer a stand-alone park.
Alongside these changes, we are proposing to create a new stand-alone plan for Norfolk Island Marine Park. You can provide comments to inform drafting of the stand-alone Norfolk Island plan, as well as comments to inform drafting of five other marine parks management plans here.
Your comments will be included and considered in a report prepared by the Director of National Parks for the Minister for the Environment and Water. Once a final design is approved, the Governor-General will be asked to revoke or amend the proclamation to expand Norfolk Marine Park and Lord Howe Marine Park.
