Overview
The Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan (Reef 2050 Plan) is the Australian and Queensland governments’ overarching strategy to protect, conserve and manage the Great Barrier Reef.
The Reef 2050 Plan is based on scientific research, analysis and lessons learnt over 4 decades of management.
The current Reef 2050 Plan has 5 priority areas for action:
limit the impacts of climate change
reduce impacts from land-based activities
reduce impacts from water-based activities
influence the reduction of international sources of impact
protect, rehabilitate and restore.
A routine review of the current Reef 2050 Plan is now underway, with the last review occurring in 2020. This review will ensure that the Reef 2050 Plan remains up to date, effective and responsive to new challenges and opportunities, and is equipped with the latest knowledge and science.
We are leading the review, working closely with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Queensland Government Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
We are consulting on the Reef 2050 Plan to ensure that management actions remain adaptive, continue to build Reef resilience and help maintain the Reef’s Outstanding Universal Value for future generations.
We are now seeking your views on an engagement paper and initial survey questions. We will consult on an exposure draft of a revised Reef 2050 Plan in late 2026.
