Overview
On 10 November 2022, we released the ‘National Energy Performance Strategy Consultation Paper’. Submissions closed on 3 February 2023.
The consultation informed the National Energy Performance Strategy (the Strategy) , which was released in March 2024.
The Strategy sets out a national plan to reduce energy use and manage energy demand. Energy performance includes energy efficiency and electrification.
For households, businesses and industry, this means:
reduced energy bills
lower emissions
improved energy reliability and security.
What we asked
The consultation sought views on 5 focus areas:
governance (including targets)
residential (including sub-sections)
commercial
industrial
supply chains and workforce
We’re also exploring how improving energy performance can impact the health and welfare of Australians. This includes Australians who come from low-income or disadvantaged households. As well as First Nations people, and regional, rural and remote communities.
Who we heard from
We heard from:
industry
non-government organisations
peak bodies
research institutions
the energy sector
individuals.
In total 135 public submissions were received.
What we heard
Feedback showed that there is broad support for action and engagement in this space. We also received support for our commitment to strategic and coordinated action to improve energy performance across the economy.
Next steps
This Strategy will strengthen the role of energy demand in system planning and decision-making. It provides a framework to build on current government initiatives and priorities adapt to the changing dynamics of Australia’s energy markets and needs of energy consumers.
We will work closely with the National Energy Transformation Partnership, consumer groups, industry, and research institutions to deliver and evolve this Strategy.
