I saw Mr Littleprouds press release recently and was glad that someone in government had listened to our issues, but I was wrong. The initiative on restricting native veg regeneration must also be extended to softwood plantations. The pine plantations in eastern nsw are without exeption environmental disasters. They are not managed in any meaningful way, are choked with weeds which are never controlled after the trees are established, they are breeding grounds for every feral and pest animal in the area, and steal an incredible amount of water. Pine plantation lack of management was the major factor in the Dunns Road Fire becoming the massive disaster it was. Lack of access, no fire mitigation work and massive blackberry infestation meant the fire could not be controlled until it got onto farm land, by which time it was quite horrendous to confront.
Since the fire we have had very good seasons, the weeds in the pine are growing at an incredible rate, and all the neighbors are working hard to control the weeds, and the pine people are doing nothing, gauranteeing us anout few years of work which need not be the case if they were decent citizens, and if the responsible government agencies were worth anything.
Quote from Mr Littleproud>>
“All farmers, including carbon farmers, need to manage their land well and do the right thing by their neighbours. There need to be safeguards in place to ensure that weeds, pests, and fire risks are actively managed, and the Nationals will secure this with these rule changes".
You need to apply this to the softwood industry, if you cant see past the lies and propaganda of the forest products association and softwood working group, you are part of the problem. Jonno Dunnion visited us and had the whole thing explained very clearly, he obviously wasnt up to the task of doing the right thing, as the pine people are doing business as usual, after holding their hands out for disaster relief funding, for the disaster they caused.
