Overview
Australians have enthusiastically embraced consumer energy resources (CER) such as solar panels, home batteries and electric vehicles. CER technologies contribute to Australia’s emissions reduction commitments and present enormous opportunities for consumers and the power system. The estimated benefits of effectively integrating CER are vast but realising these benefits is not a given.
A high CER system has different characteristics and requirements than the system of the past, so new ways of doing things are needed.
The Redefine roles for market and power systems operations workstream (M3/P5) workstream aims to integrate CER into the power system and market by:
defining all the activities required for effective power system and market operations in a high CER future
assigning them to the appropriate ‘roles’ (type of organisation) and ‘actors’ (actual organisation)
considering options to improve how key activities are undertaken now and in the future - including options to reform market and governance arrangements at the distribution level.
This workstream is part of the National CER Roadmap which was released by the Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council (ECMC) in July 2024, to tackle the challenges of effectively integrate CER into the power system and energy markets. The Redefine roles for market and power systems operations workstream (M3/P5) workstream is being progressed in parallel with the Data sharing arrangements to inform planning and enable future markets (M2) workstream which identifies the key capabilities and associated gaps, in relation to data and data sharing across the power system and energy markets.
