In 2020, we developed the National Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife. The guidelines:
raised awareness of the potential impacts of artificial light on wildlife
provide best practice lighting design principles
provide a framework to assess and manage impacts on our listed, at-risk wildlife.
The success of this work requires an in-depth understanding of how artificial light impacts different wildlife. This goes beyond marine turtles, seabirds and migratory shorebirds, currently addressed by the guidelines.
As light pollution research grows, we want to expand evidence-based guidance on the impacts of artificial light for Australia’s terrestrial mammals and ecological communities.
We have developed 2 new appendixes to the National Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife:
Draft Terrestrial Mammal Appendix
Draft Ecological Communities Appendix
We invite you to have your say on one or both.
What’s next?
Your feedback will help:
inform our approach to working together to conserve our protected species and ecological communities from light pollution
refine the draft appendixes to ensure they are current and fit-for-purpose as part of the National Light Pollution Guideline for Wildlife.
