About the consultation

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has received an application to include Penaeus monodon (black tiger prawn) on the Live Import List under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

The applicant’s original report addressing suitability against the terms of reference was published in 2018. Comments were received and the applicant subsequently provided further information. The application was paused in 2019, but supplementary information has been provided this year.

Invitation to comment is open on 3 documents prepared by the applicant.

1. The 2018 document assesses the suitability of this species for import into Australia against the Terms of Reference.

2. The 2019 document addresses concerns raised by the public during the 2018 consultation process.

3. The 2025 document provides updated information on the genetics of Australian P. monodon and the disease status of prawns domestically and globally. This includes a summary of recent developments within the Australian prawn farming industry.
