About the consultation

We have received an application to include Eclectus polychloros (Papuan eclectus) on the Live Import List under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

The application was previously published under the scientific name Eclectus roratus (Moluccan eclectus) on our Have Your Say and Invitations to Comment webpages from 31 March 2025 to 14 May 2025.

Comments received during this consultation period indicated a taxonomic revision to the Eclectus genus. We reviewed the taxonomy and in agreement with the applicant will now assess the specimen as Eclectus polychloros (Papuan eclectus).

The report has been prepared by the applicant against the terms of reference in which they assess the suitability of this species for import into Australia. With agreement from the applicant, we have included ‘(sic)’ after each mention of Eclectus roratus, to reflect that it is being assessed as Eclectus polychloros.

The application is to include the species on the Live Import List, not just an individual animal. If listed, anyone can import the animal, subject to conditions.

All comments received will be provided to the applicant to address in finalising the assessment report. We will consider any relevant information and provide all comments to the Minister as part of the briefing package.

In inviting public comment, we would value commentary on the broader aspects of the applications or specific items such as:

  • Can this species survive in the Australian environment and breed with other species that may be present in Australia?

  • What diseases can this species carry or transmit and what diseases is it known to be susceptible to?

  • What are the likely potential impacts of this species, if this species were to establish a feral population in Australia?

Finalised risk assessment reports may be published on our website. Comments received during this consultation process may be used and referenced in the final report. Comments will be attributed to organisations, not to individuals. If you wish your comments to remain confidential, you should clearly mark the relevant part(s) of your comments as ‘confidential’.

If it is not possible to meet the deadline, please contact exotic.species@dcceew.gov.au.
