Overview
A hydrogen certification scheme is a standardised process of tracing and certifying where and how hydrogen is made, and the associated environmental impacts (for example, greenhouse gas emissions). It provides consumers with transparency around the environmental impacts of the hydrogen they use.
As outlined in the National Hydrogen Strategy, Australia will seek to play a lead role in designing and developing an international hydrogen certification scheme.
We propose an initial international certification scheme to track production technology, scope 1 and scope 2 carbon emissions, and production location. The scheme could be expanded later to include water consumption and other factors. This approach would allow countries (or regions) to set their own definitions of “green” or “low-emissions” hydrogen with reference to agreed international standards.
Why your views matter
This survey will help the department understand the most important high-level aspects of an international and/or domestic hydrogen certification scheme. We'll consult later on the detailed design of any scheme.
What happens next
Your views will be used to inform the Australian Government's development of a certification scheme for hydrogen. Further consultation on discrete aspects of the scheme will be undertaken as necessary.
