The Australian Government has now released the Future Fuels and Vehicles Strategy.

The feedback we received has informed this strategy. It highlighted the need for more investment in infrastructure to meet the needs of Australians and to address other barriers affecting low emission vehicle uptake.

Overview

New vehicle technologies and fuels will drive the future of road transport in Australia. Increased availability of battery electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, biofuels and associated recharging and refueling infrastructure will:

  • give consumers more choice

  • provide productivity, emissions reduction, fuel security and air quality benefits

Our Future Fuels Strategy: Discussion Paper sets out the direction and practical actions to enable the private sector to commercially deploy low emissions road transport technologies at scale.

Why we are consulting

We are inviting feedback on the priorities and actions to create an environment that:

  • enables consumer choice

  • stimulates industry development

  • reduces emissions in the road transport sector

Your feedback will shape the Future Fuels Strategy and government programs investing in future fuels technologies. These will include the Future Fuels Package and Freight Energy Productivity Program.

Discussion paper

Our Future Fuels Strategy: Discussion Paper [2MB PDF] [11MB DOCX] follows preliminary consultation with stakeholders. It explores the key issues and opportunities related to an increased uptake of new vehicle technologies.

You can submit responses to some or all of the questions in the paper via the online survey. You can also upload a written submission or supporting documentation at the end of the survey.
