Please provide comments relating to the boundaries, proposed zoning and assigned IUCN categories for the proposed Macquarie Island Marine Park
Strongly support the proposed expansion to cover the whole EEZ.
Encourage an expansion of the current sanctuary zone if the science supports this (particularly as this may be the 'last stop' for many animals with additional pressures of climate change). Would prefer to see more protection for Macquarie Ridge.
Please provide comments relating to natural values and/or pressures within the proposed Macquarie Island Marine Park
Imperative that we protect natural values of Macquarie - create a global example for management of this exceptional ecosystem. Support the continuation of well-managed and necessary research. Would prefer to remove option for fisheries/potential industry in the area, but if Habitat Protection Zone is maintained advocate for only the current sustainable fishing under strict management and monitoring. Would be concerned with any suggestions for industry (traditional or renewables) in the area as unlikely that construction itself could be low impact, and ongoing presence could cause issues for migration/feeding patterns. Support strict guidelines for least disruptive tourism also, with limits per season and emphasis on true eco-friendly options.
Please provide comments relating to the proposed activity tables for the proposed Macquarie Island Marine Park
As above. Support the tables, with a note of concern about potential incidents and monitoring of commercial shipping (and tourist ships). RE: fishing - concern with potential damage to VMEs (Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems) and albatross etc. with longlines - assume if this is considered a sustainable fishery these are being very closely monitored
Please provide any other comments on the proposed Macquarie Island Marine Park
Wonderful opportunity to do something great here. Hope that the proposed expansion (or even greater protection) goes ahead. Hope that the new 'footprint' if accepted will not detract from the need to continue to raise science-driven protection elsewhere.
