Overview

We are seeking feedback on an information document and draft survey guidelines for little penguins under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

This work aims to:

  • help proponents and ecological consultants prepare assessment information

  • enable efficient and robust assessments by regulators for proposed developments in marine and coastal environments

It includes information about:

  • important habitat areas

  • mitigation and avoidance measures

  • impact assessment considerations.

These documents have been informed by a literature review about little penguin behaviour and ecology.

The survey guidelines will help proponents provide consistent, high-quality information to support assessment documentation.

Use of this information is not mandatory. However, proponents who do use it are likely to experience a smoother assessment process.

Feedback received during the consultation period will be considered when finalising the documents.

This work is funded by the Australian Government’s Renewables Environmental Research Initiative. You can find out more about the RERI here: The Renewables Environmental Research Initiative - DCCEEW
