Overview

The Australian Government is seeking to recognise other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs).

OECMs are not currently recognised in Australia. Your feedback will inform the development of a national framework to recognise OECMs. OECMs can help Australia meet our national target to protect and conserve 30% of Australia’s land by 2030.

A staged approach is being taken to develop the framework. The first round of public consultation seeks your feedback on some guiding principles. The second round of consultation will consider a draft national framework and a draft assessment tool.

We are seeking your comments on the draft principles as part of the first round of consultation.

The draft principles have been developed in consultation with all state and territory governments. Although this work relates to land based OECMs, the thinking may help recognise marine OECMs in the future.

To have your say, you can take our survey, and / or provide a written submission.

Submit your feedback by 28 April 2023.
