The Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee recently completed a crediting period extension review of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative – Commercial and Public Lighting) Methodology Determination 2015.

The committee found evidence to suggest that extending the crediting period would not continue to result in abatement that is unlikely to occur in the ordinary course of events. Based on its findings, the committee recommended not to extend the crediting period for the commercial and public lighting method.

The committee is now seeking further relevant information, data, and feedback to inform a decision on whether to recommend revoking the method.

Outcomes

The Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee considered the submissions. The committee then wrote to the Minister and recommended revoking the commercial and public lighting method.

The Minister revoked the method on 7 April 2022. This means that no new project can be registered under the method. Projects that were already registered under the method are not affected. They will continue for the duration of their 7 year crediting period.
