Background

Building on feedback received in response to a discussion paper on improving fuel quality standards, the Ministerial Forum on Vehicle Emissions released the Better fuel for cleaner air draft Regulation Impact Statement (draft RIS) for public consultation.

This draft RIS proposed a series of amendments to improve Australia’s fuel quality standards under the Fuel Quality Standards Act 2000. It forms part of a package of measures by the Ministerial Forum on Vehicle Emissions to reduce motor vehicle emissions, and draws on public comments received in response to the discussion paper.

The release provided an opportunity for further public consultation on proposed improvements to Australia’s fuel quality standards. These improvements aim to achieve better health, environmental and vehicle operability outcomes.
