Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve proposed proclamation and proposal to prepare a draft management plan

Public consultation on the proposal to expand the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve and proposal to prepare a draft management plan for the reserve was open from 5 July 2024 to 5 September 2024. The public comment period has now closed.

A total of 28,592 submissions were received.

Overview

The Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve is a marine reserve in the sub-Antarctic Southern Ocean.

The Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve Management Plan 2014-2024 was due for its 10-year statutory review in 2024. This review was completed by the Australian Antarctic Division, a Division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

Members of the public were invited to provide comments on a:

a. proposed Proclamation to amend the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve) Proclamation 2002 (as amended in 2014); and

b. proposal to prepare a draft management plan for the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve (the Reserve).
