The department is considering responses and preparing an exposure draft of a new landfill gas method for assessment by the Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee (ERAC). As part of its assessment, the ERAC will consult on an exposure draft of the proposed new method. You will have the opportunity to provide further feedback at this time. The exposure draft will be supported by a consultation paper that outlines evidence supporting the proposed new method and responds to feedback raised as part of this consultation.
Overview
In July 2022, the government appointed an independent panel to review the integrity of the ACCU Scheme (the ACCU Review). The Panel provided their Review report to the government in December 2022, and the government accepted in principle all the 16 recommendations.
Recommendation 10 of the Review is about improving the integrity and transparency of two Landfill Gas (LFG) methods (the Landfill Gas Method and the Landfill Gas (generation) Method).
The Reform Options paper outlines the options being considered by the government for adjusting methane proportion measurements for landfill gas projects, adjusting baselines of existing and new projects, and ensuring baselines are upwards sloping. The paper also invited feedback on crediting periods for landfill gas projects.
