Placing the zone just 10km off Norah Head's coastline is in disregard for the community, the wildlife, the culture of the area.
Even the proposal area is misleading - Pacific Ocean off Hunter - We are the Central Coast region.
The area that is set to lose the most from this was not even part of the consultation process.
At least spare us the dignity of dumping the turbines so close to our coastline, move the zone to at least 40km out.
Sydney did not want them on their doorstep (and this zone was scrapped completely?) and Norah
Head has unfortunately become the landing zone for Sydney's rebuttal, but to add further "salt to the wound," our town is also bearing the full brunt of having these turbines placed well within our unspoiled coastline's visibility. If we are forced to have these on our coast, why must they be so close to our shoreline? For the invested companies to save some dollars, when ultimately they are set to enjoy huge profits at our town's expense?
There is the real potential for a negative impact on our tourism industry, with the beauty of the area compromised. Norah Head, the suburb that houses a heritage 1903-built lighthouse, the last of
NSW's colonial-built lighthouses; a place to watch the whale migration with panoramic views across the Pacific Ocean; a renowned surfing reserve, and a suburb that is highly regarded with sought- after real estate. Rate payers who have secured a spot in this quite exclusive suburb have the worrying concerns that house prices in this area will plummet with these industrial works.
We are a passionate community with a rich cultural history, home to vulnerable flora and fauna.
These turbines are bound to lead to devastating disruptions to our marine life, affecting marine mammals relying on sonar, and for such a small return. Show us the statistics of the success of these wind farms.
Questions need to be answered about how this zone was so silently altered to include Norah Head, with little to no community consultation. Not even a meeting in our suburb – meetings no one I know had any knowledge of. Even our local council is asking for more transparency and information.
This technology has not been shown to be a long-term renewable energy solution, with issues in
Europe's offshore wind farms we could be learning from, instead of rushing in to line the pockets of investors.
