There should be no further recovery of water under the Basin Plan until there is a Basin
Plan review, including a review of water usage by the Commonwealth and State Water
Holders, to determine their average water use over the last 5 years, 10 years and 20
years. Any business or organisation implementing a $13 billion plan would responsibly
review its plan along the way and determine whether changes to the original plan were
required.
In detail, describe your idea or concept that could help with delivering the Murray-Darling Basin Plan’s 450GL water recovery target or create water efficiencies and environmental outcomes with less water
This would help identify if an additional 450GL is required and would help identify exactly
which wetlands need additional water. With 70% of Australian land privately owned
projects and strategies which deliver water to private wetlands need to be developed. We
need a multi-measures approach to the Basin Plan.
What are the barriers, challenges, or risks to implementing your idea?
The only challenge or risk to implementing these ideas is South Australia prioritising lazy
options for environmental outcomes rather than wanting to achieve the best long term
environmental and economic outcomes for the entire Nation.
Egos, politics, people protecting their jobs and misleading modelling all stand in the way
of achieving common sense in implementing a Basin Plan that has the potential to lead the
way in sensible water policy.
