Australia supports the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond our maritime boundaries through the High Seas Biodiversity Act 2026 (the Act).
The Act implements Australia’s obligations under the High Seas Biodiversity Treaty (BBNJ).
The Act will enter into force for Australia when Australia becomes a Party to BBNJ, which is expected to occur later in 2026.
A healthy and resilient ocean supports Australia’s significant marine industries and is a critical connection between Australia and our region.
