On Friday, 28 March 2025 the government assumed a Caretaker role. Some consultations have been deactivated until further notice, in accordance with the Guidance on Caretaker Conventions.

Overview

On 14 October 2024, the department, on behalf of the E3 program, released a Consultation Regulation Impact Statement (CRIS) on Distribution Transformers. The consultation closed on 31 January 2025.

Distribution transformers are currently regulated under the Greenhouse Energy Minimum Standards Act, which focuses on energy efficiency. The goal of this consultation was to explore expanding the regulations and setting stricter minimum energy performance standards for these transformers.

The Department sought input from industry and interested stakeholders on the options outlined in the CRIS. Input was also sought to assist development of accurate estimates and more appropriate assumptions in the cost: benefit analysis. Feedback received from this consultation will be included in future policy options for regulation of distribution transformers.
