Dear David,
RE: Carbon Credits, Carbon Farming Initiative – Carbon Capture and Storage Methodology Determination
2021
On behalf of CSIRO I would like to provide some background on our current Carbon Capture and Storage
(CCS) activities relating to this methodology determination.
CSIRO has expertise in underground, land, and marine-environment CCS. Due to our broad expertise in CCS,
CSRIO has been providing ongoing input to the draft CCS methodology through contributions and discussions
with the Clean Energy Regulator and Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources.
CSIRO supports the development of Carbon Farming Initiative and CCS methodology, and related CCS
methodologies such as for blue carbon, as foundational guidance to facilitate the application of CCS
technologies by industry. I would like to reiterate CSIRO’s willingness to continue providing scientific advice
to the Clean Energy Regulator as input to the development and refinement of CCS methodologies.
In a broader context, CSIRO acknowledges that Australian businesses are seeking to reduce emissions
through the adoption of low-emission technologies and as such we are directing considerable research focus
in this area. As part of this, CSIRO recognises the role for CCS in reducing emissions and creating value
through the decarbonisation of carbon-intensive industries and processes, and we note that the Australian
Government’s Low Emissions Technology Statement 2020 identifies CCS as a priority low emissions
technology for Australia.
CSIRO also acknowledges the important role of the Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee
(ERAC) in reviewing and assessing methodologies for compliance, and we value the opportunity to provide
continued representation on the ERAC.
Yours sincerely
